GUÐRUN & GUÐRUN
Wool is a material that has been used in clothing for centuries. Back in the day it was referred to as the Faroese gold, a material whose protective properties made it possible to wear year-round come rain or shine. However, with time, the appreciation for this material declined leading to wool simply becoming a byproduct of farming to be discarded or burnt.
Changing this one stitch at a time are the design duo Gudrun & Gudrun in the Faroe Islands. Inspired by traditional Faroese knitwear, the duo seamlessly intertwines classic and contemporary in their pieces, creating timeless knits to last a lifetime. Ethical production and sustainability are at the heart of their making process creating a sense of community through knitting.
The rich juxtaposition of textures reflects the ethereal Faroese landscape. The pieces seamlessly strike a balance between fragility and longevity with durability being a fundamental consideration in the design process. A mix of materials – Faroese wool and locally sourced waste material – create a beautiful culmination of textures, giving a light and effortless quality to the pieces. They exude an air of femininity and feel like an embrace from the landscape itself. Tasteful integration of waste material infuses the traditional knits with a contemporary twist.
Gudrun & Gudrun have truly formed a community around their brand. They have contributed to the revival of knitting and have successfully used it as a tool to bring people together. This rejuvenation of craft has bought a newfound appreciation for the handmade, highlighting the work that goes into the production of clothing. Women around the world are part of an inclusive community of hand-knitters.
Through the healing and connecting nature of slow made craft, Gudrun & Gudrun have brought people together and spread Faroese cultural traditions into the world.
