MAISIE MCDONALD
Convergence by Play seeks to revive the spirit of play and connection, two qualities often overlooked in our work-centric and individualistic culture.Drawing inspiration from the whimsy of toy design, these pieces serve as catalysts for unbridled imagination, storytelling, and a joyful embrace of the absurd, skillfully employing a rich palette of color, texture, and sculptural forms. Yet, their enchantment doesn't cease there—each component boasts the remarkable ability to interlock with its counterparts using Velcro within their tubes, promoting a sense of collectivity. As a result, the collection transforms into a dynamic, living sculpture, where each piece contributes to the whole.
The pieces were all knit on a hand knitting machine using mohair and acrylic yarn, and hand brushed. As the different color yarns were brushed together, they created a layer of depth to the colors, imitating the dimensionality of real fur. Chicken wire was used as a base to create the helmets and other sculptural elements, and sinamay held the shape of the tubes while allowing for movement.
