Xiaoying (Steph) Cao's work offers a soft take on "Alternate Reality".

She pays keen attention to how her knits interact with the body, while the acrylic connectors seem to defy this consideration. It is as though the connectors envelop the body, expanding in width and height, thereby warping our sense of reality.

Employing a modular system of various textures, Xiaoying crafts an infinite array of structural possibilities. She explores multiple dimensions, juxtaposing knitted constructions with solid constructions. Through diverse knitting patterns and yarns, she shapes volumes and textures, giving rise to organic forms that expand into space like soft, airy splashes of color. Her work is essentially a visual investigation of airy, fluffy structures.

Xiaoying elegantly blends the feminine, bringing together disparate elements. She perceives both the soft and the solid as feminine qualities. The softness, pliable and delicate, stretches with grace, while the solid provides a steadfast foundation. Knitting patterns act as a tool to draw attention to the body, creating emphasized stretches and gaps.

In the end, Xiaoying's creations serve as a captivating visual exploration of soft, ethereal structures. They evoke a surreal and imaginative quality, a dreamlike illusion that she masterfully transforms into reality.
